MRCS Penang Youth Annual Report 2016

Youth members in the School Units form an integral and important component of the membership base of MRCS Penang. Many activities and courses were organised for the Youth members throughout the year with the support of the Penang State Education Department (JPN).

The Seberang Perai Utara District (SPU) and Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) District jointly organised a Youth Training Camp from May 28 – 30. The camp at SMK Sg Acheh was officiated by Tuan Haji Norhassim B. Hj Mahat, the Education Officer of SPS District. A total of 122 participants from the School Units took part.

The Penang State Education department (JPN) organised the State Level Formation Foot-drill Competition on July 20 at the State Co-curriculum Centre of Penang. The MRCS officers Mr. Daniel Lim, Ms Foo Lily and Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching were appointed as foot-drill judges to help the technical secretariat of JPN.

The MRCS Penang State Foot-drill Competition was held at Taman Perwira on July 24. The competition was officiated by Tuan Haji Zulkafli Bin Kamaruddin, the Head of Co-curriculum, JPN Penang. A total of 450 Youth members participated. The Champion and the Best Commander category was won by SMK Bagan Jaya. SMK Chung Ling Butterworth emerged as 1st Runner-up and SMK Taman Perwira the 2nd Runner-up.

MRCS Island District was selected to represent MRCS Penang at the Merdeka National Day Parade 2016, held on August 31 at Padang Kota Lama. A team of 80 Youth members from SMK St. Xavier and SMK Hutchings took part in the march past.

Youth Officers, Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching, Mr. Daniel Lim and Ms Foo Lily, were honoured by JPN for their outstanding contributions to co-curriculum activities. Mdm Ooi received the Outstanding Technical Official Award, which was presented to her at the Penang State Co-curriculum Award Presentation Ceremony 2016 on November 23 at Balik Pulau. Mr. Daniel Lim and Ms Foo Lily received their Certificate of Appreciation as JPN co-curriculum technical officers.

The Youth members in schools form an integral and important component of the membership base of MRCS Penang Branch. They are young and eager to serve humanity and every training and opportunity need to be given to them.

A host of activities are organised for the Youth members throughout the year. Many of these activities are carried out with the support of the Penang State Education Department (JPN).

 

The State-level Uniform Bodies’ integration camp for primary schools was organised by the Penang State Education Department (JPN) from March 9 to 12 at Teluk Bahang, Penang.  The MRCS Link units which participated were SJKC Keow Kuang, SJKC Paik Teik, SJKT Nibong Tebal, SK St Xavier and SK Convent Green Lane.

The Penang State Education Department (JPN) hosted a National level Uniform Bodies Camp for Primary Girls’ Schools on March 29 to April 2, 2015 at the State Co-curriculum Centre of Penang.  A total of 800 campers consisting of  MRCS Link Units from various States took part.  The MRCS Penang Branch was tasked with  Ambulance Standby Duty with first aiders support from SPT Chapter.  OC Link Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching and 3 MRCS Link Officers assisted the JPN secretariat.

The MRCS Link National Camp 2015 organised by SK Minden Height in collaboration with MRCS Penang Branch was held on May 21 to 24.  It was a successful camp in which 31 schools participated with a  total of 266 campers from various States.  The School Headmaster Encik Ilias Bin Tajudin led the Organising Committee of 53 teachers and the voluntary trainers from MRCS Penang Branch. Bus company Rapid Penang  provided shuttle bus services for participants to enjoy the round island outdoor activities.

The Penang State Education Department (JPN) organised the State Level Formation Foot-drill Competition on May 26 & 27, 2015 at the State Co-curriculum Centre of Penang. MRCS Youth Officer Ms Lily Foo and O/C Link Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching were appointed as foot-drill judges to assist the technical secretariat of JPN.

 

The National (Northern Zone) Formation Foot-drill Competition was hosted by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) on August 7 & 8 at PPD Kota Setar, Alor Star, Kedah.  JPN Penang appointed MRC Officer Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching as one of the judges and invited her to a special management course on August 5 & 6 at SK Taman Aman, Alor Star, Kedah.

The MRCS Northern Zone Youth and Link Management Meeting was held on August 11 & 12 at MRCS Perak Branch Headquarters, Ipoh. Penang Branch Assistant Director of Youth Mr. Lim Kuo Shee and the SPT O/C Youth Mr. Eric Tan attended the meeting with other State officers from Kedah, Perak and Perlis.

Merdeka Parade 2015 Champion (Unit 16 SMJK Jit Sin)

MRCS Youth Unit 16 from Jit Sin High School, SPT won the Merdeka National Day Parade 2015 Champion in the category of schools contingent and received their prize from the Penang State Government in a celebration ceremony of Malaysia Day 2015.

MRCS Link Unit from SJKC Keow Kuang SPT and SJKC Paik Teik SPS won the Champion prize in First Aid Competition at the National Camp of Primary Girls’ Schools Uniform Bodies 2015 organised by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and received special recognition prizes from JPN Penang at the Annual Co-curriculum Excellence Awards presentation ceremony held at Nibong Tebal on October  7.

The MRCS Youth Leadership Camp 2015 was held on December 18 to 20 at SMK Bandar Baru Perda, Bukit Mertajam.  The camp was  officiated by Tuan Haji Zulkafli bin Kamaruddin, the Head of Co-curriculum, JPN Penang.  The objectives of the camp were to develop the leadership potential in the Youths, to encourage team-building amongst the members, and to promote the MRCS Youth Proficiency Badges Scheme.  The 3-day camp involved 250 members and officers from various Chapters.  They participated in workshops conducted by MRCS certified instructors and invited trainers from the Malaysian Army, the Rover Scouts, the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA).

At the Chapter level, various activities were also held. The SPU Chapter Youth Training Camp was held at SMK Bertam Perdana from March 15 to 17.  A total of 186 students and officers participated.

 

The SPT Formation Foot-drill Competition for all uniform bodies was held on April 14 &15 at the State Co-curriculum Centre of Penang, in Bukit Mertajam.  The District Education Office (PPD) of Central Seberang Perai appointed judges from various uniform bodies, included MRCS Youth Officer Ms Lily Foo and O/C Link Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching.  The MRCS Link contingent from SJKC Keow Kuang  won the First runner-up in the Primary school category and SMK Sama Gagah won the Second runner-up in the secondary school category.

The MRCS Island Chapter Youth Leadership Development Program 2015 was held at the MRCS Penang Branch Headquarters on December 12 & 13.  A total of 45 Youth leaders joined the workshop conducted by Island Chapter O/C Youth, Mr. Daniel Lim.

MRCS teachers and Youth & Link Officers were also trained to improve their skills in imparting leadership and MRCS content to Youth members.

 

The Penang State Education Department (JPN) organised a Co-curriculum Planning and Management Course for a group of invited JPN Technical officers at Langkawi Seaview Hotel from Jan 23 to 25. MRCS officers Ms Foo Lily, Mr. Daniel Lim and Mdm. Ooi Hwei Ching attended the course.

The Northern Zone Basic Certification Course for MRCS Teachers was organized by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) and MRCS Headquarters on August 3 to 6 at the Teachers’ Training Centre (PLGDP) located at Sungai Karangan, Padang Serai, Kedah.  The course contents covered Basic First Aid, Basic Health Education, Basic RC Education and International Humanitarian Law. A total of 12 teachers from Penang attended.

The Youth members form an essential membership base to the Penang Branch.  Hence the Youth and Link members in the secondary and primary schools need to be nurtured from young in order to sustain their interest in the MRC Movement.

Throughout the year many activities were organized.  On March 3 to 5, the Penang State Education Department (JPN) organized an Integration Camp for Primary Schools’ Unifrom Bodies at Hutan Lipur Teluk Bahang, Penang. Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching was appointed by JPN to assist the camp secretariat and accompany the MRC Penang Link contingent.

The JPN held another Uniform Bodies’ Integration Camp for Secondary Schools from March 5 to 7 at the same venue.  MRC Youth members from SMK Penang Free, SMK St. Xavier, SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad Said, SMK Bagan Jaya, SMK Simpang Empat, SMK Hutching, SMK Jit Sin, SMK Sama Gagah, BM High School, SMJK Chung Ling Butterworth, SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Taman Perwira participated.  The accompanying teachers were Mr Daniel Lim, Ms Foo Lily and Mdm Saai Bua.

On April 21 & 22, the Central of Seberang Perai District Education Office (PPD) organized the SPT Formation Foot-drill Competition for all uniform bodies at the State Co-curriculum Centre located in Bukit Mertajam.  The PPD appointed MRC Youth Officers Ms Lily Foo and SPT O/C Link Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching as judges.  The MRC Link contingent from SJKC Keow Kuang won the First Runner-up trophy.  SMK Sama Gagah, SMK Taman Perwira and SMK Convent BM also took part in the competition.

A similar Formation Foot-drill Competition was held in SPS District on April 18.  PPD invited SPS Chapter Officer, Mr Chang Chi Chern as one of the judges.  MRC Units from SMK Simpang Ampat, SMK Suajana Indah, SMK Tasek and SMK Seri Nibong took part in the competition.

The State level Formation Foot-drill Competition took place on June 24 & 25 at the Penang State Co-curriculum Centre.  Ms Lily Foo and Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching were again appointed as judges.  MRC Youth Units from SMKA (P) Almashoor represented the North-east District, Penang Island.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, together with the MRC National Headquarters, organized the National Youth Camp on May 22 – 25 at Putrajaya.  The MRC Penang contingent consisted of 38 members from all Chapters.  They were led by Mr Jeffy Chong, assisted by Ms Lily Foo, Mdm Saw Yam Mei and Ms Saai Bua a/p Ebau.

The Penang Branch hosted a contingent of 75 Youth members and four Youth Officers from SMJK Krian, Parit Buntar, Perak who paid a visit to the Branch on August 1.  Branch Director Mr Chow Thian Pow, Assistant Director Youth Mr Lim Kuo Shee and Senior Instructor Mr Lim Kok Kong briefed the visitors.

The Youth Units from the Island Chapter represented the Branch at the National Day Merdeka Parade held on August 31.  The VAD members together with an ambulance were on public standby duty.

MRC Penang Link Workshop 2014

The MRC Penang Link Workshop in collaboration with the State Education Department (JPN) was held on November 8 at SJKC Keow Kuang, Bukit Mertajam. About 200 members including teachers and Officers from various Primary Schools took part.  The objective is to encourage the Link members to participate in MRC co-curriculum activities and to train the young members in camp craft, basic practical first aid knowledge, use of life-saving equipment, foot-drill and skills in cooking.

The Penang State Education Department awarded Youth Unit 42 Chung Ling Butterworth as one of the “Top 3 Best Secondary Schools’ Uniform Bodies in Penang”, while Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching (O/C Link from SPT Chapter) received the “Outstanding Co-curriculum Teacher’s Award”.  The ceremony took place on October 8 at the Institut Pendidikan Guru Tunku Bainun , Bukit Mertajam Campus.

MRCS Penang Youth Annual Report 2013

The Penang Branch believes in nurturing the members from young. Hence Youth and Link units in the secondary and primary schools respectively are very important components of the membership base in Penang.

Throughout the year, the Branch organized activities for the Youths and the Links. The regular activities included first aid training, leadership training, foot-drill and camping skills. These were all aimed at instilling discipline and teaching the Youths social skills and interaction with their peers and their leaders. The Branch also encouraged its Youth and Link members to participate actively in the co-curriculum activities and events organized by the Penang State Education Department and the Ministry of Education Malaysia.

On Jan 21 2013, the Penang State Education Department (JPN) invited all uniform bodies including Government Organizations (GOs) & Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) to a Conference on Co-curriculum Management held at the Teachers Institute of Tuanku Bainun, Bukit Mertajam. The event was attended by MRC Penang Branch Assistant Director of Youth, Lim Kuo Shee.

The MRC Link Junior Camp was held from March 22-24 at SMK Datuk Haji Mohd Noor Ahmad, Gelugor. About 100 children & teachers from SK Minden Height took part in this introductory camp with the support of Headmaster En. Illias Bin Tajudin and the PIBG. (the Parents Teachers Association).

The District Education Office (PPD) of Central Seberang Perai appointed judges from various uniform bodies, including MRC Officers Ms Lily Foo and SPT O/C Link Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching. MRC Youth unit from SMK Sama Gagah again emerged as Champion in the Secondary School Category.  In addition, the Link unit from SJKC Keow Kuang also won the First Runner-up for the Primary School Category.

MRC officers Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching and Ms Foo Lily were again appointed as Judges by the Penang State Education Department (JPN) in the State Level Formation Foot-drill Competition organized on April 29 at the State Co-curriculum Centre, Penang.  Both of them, including Island Chapter O/C Youth Daniel Lim are recognized by JPN as Co-curriculum Technical Officers.

National Link Camp - Learn First Aid

The MRC National Link Camp 2013 was held from May 2-4 at Pusat Kokurikulum Pulau Pinang. The camp was hosted by SK Minden Height with the support of Headmaster En. Illias Bin Tajudin, teachers from high performance schools, PIBG and the Ministry of Education Malaysia. MRC Penang Branch, SPT Chapter and SPS Chapter assisted in the children’s training activities and provided first aid standby.

On May 22 -26, the National Youth Volunteers Camp was organized in Putrajaya by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia. The MRC Penang contingent consisted of 44 Youth members from all Chapters. The contingent was led by Ms Foo Lily (JPN Co-curriculum Technical Officer) who was assisted by Ms Saw Yam Mei (Teacher from SMJK Chung Ling) and Ms Saai Bua A/P Ebau (Teacher from SMK Sama Gagah).

The Penang State Education Department (JPN) held a training camp from June 13-15 for uniform bodies at SMK Mutiara Impian, a secondary sports school in Seberang Perai South. About 450 students participated in the First Aid practical skill station. The briefing for this was done by facilitators from MRC: Pn.Shorgajati Bt Abdullah, Mr. Chang Chi Chern, Ms Foo Lily, Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching, Mr. Yew Fei Yun, Mr. Siaw Yen Ming (VAD, SPT) and Mr. Ong Theng Zhao (VAD, SPS).

The National Foot-drill Competition 2013 (Northern zone) organized by Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) was held on July 6 at the Penang State Co-curriculum Centre. MRC Seberang Perai Central Chapter provided ambulance service with two crew for the standby duty and 15 Youth members led by JPN technical officers Mr. Daniel Lim and Ms Lily Foo to assist in the first aid.

From August 30 to September 1, the MRC Youth Leadership Development programme was held at Penang Hill. About 80 Youth leaders joined the workshop conducted by Island Chapter O/C Youth, Daniel Lim.

The Penang State Government held the National Day Merdeka Parade on August 31. A total of 49 MRC Youth members from SMK Taman Perwira and three officers participated in the march past held in Butterworth. Seberang Perai North Chapter also helped in the public first aid duty.

The objective of the Camp was to develop leadership potential in outstanding Youths, to encourage team-building amongst Youths and to promote MRC Youth proficiency badges scheme. About 300 members and officers were involved in making this camp a success.

Besides camp crafts which included the setting up of tents and gadgets at the campsite, other activities included mass-cooking, exploring the International Humanitarian Laws, international phonetics & radio telecommunication skills, foot-drill training, fire safety precautions, casualty transportation techniques, learning practical first aid, CPR, team building and youth gathering. The course was conducted by MRC certified Instructors, the Royal Malaysian Army, Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad, the Scout Master and Malaysia Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society (MARTS).

All the activities for the Youth and Link members were successfully carried with the support of the relevant MRC Officers at Branch and Chapter levels as well as the Youth Officers at the schools. The Branch worked closely with he State Education Department (JPN) and all District Education Offices (PPD) in supporting the co-curriculum programmes for the school students.

Penang Branch believes in starting the members young. Hence Youth Units and Links in the secondary and primary schools respectively are an important component of the membership base in the Penang Branch.

Activities to train the Youths and the Links are organized throughout the year. These activities include first aid training, leadership training, foot-drill and camping skills, all aimed at instilling discipline and teaching the youths social skills and interaction with their peers and their leaders. The Branch took part in the Primary Leadership Course for all NGO uniform bodies which was organized by the Penang State Education Department (JPN) from March 23 to 25. This was held at the National Service PLKN White Resort campsite located at Balik Pulau on Penang Island. A total of 35 Link members from SK St. Xavier’s, SK Permatang Tok Jaya Sg Dua, SJKC Jit Sin A, SJKC Sin Ya Alma, SK Stowell, SJKC Keow Kuang, SK Covent, SJKC Pai Teik participated. They were monitored by JPN Co-curriculum Technical Officer, Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching (SPT Chapter O/C Link) and three other teachers from SPS Chapter. The team won the third prize in handicraft design and the 4th prize in cultural performance.

The Penang State Education Department (JPN) organized a Secondary Leadership Course for all NGO uniform bodies from March 29 to 31 at the National Service PLKN White Resort campsite located at Balik Pulau. JPN appointed Co-curriculum Technical Officer, Ms Lily Foo, to monitor our Youth members for this 3-day 2-night camp.

The SPT District Formation Foot-drill Competition for all uniform bodies was held on April 9 & 10 at the Penang State Co-curriculum Centre located at Alma, Bukit Mertajam. The District Education Office (PPD) of Central Seberang Perai appointed judges from various uniform bodies, including MRC Officers Ms Lily Foo and Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching. MRC Youth members from SMK Sama Gagah again emerged as Champions in the Secondary School Category. Our Link members from SJKC Keow Kuang won the First Runner-up placing for the Primary School Category. Youth members from Bukit Mertajam High School and Bukit Mertajam Conventalso participated in the competition.

The District Education Office (PPD) of Seberang Perai South organized the SPS District Foot-drill Competition in Kulim on April 14. PPD invited MRC Officers, Mr Chang Chi Chern and Mr Chuah Soo Hong to be judges. A total of 5 MRC Youth Units took part in this competition. These Units were from SMK Seri Nibong, SMK Tasek, SMK Simpang Empat, SJKC Kg. Valdor and SJKC Khen Khoon.

On June 2 – 5, MRC Selangor Branch and the National Headquarters organized the Tutti Fratelli International Friendship Camp. Penang Branch selected five Youth leaders from SMK Sama Gagah, Permatang Pauh to attend the camp held at Shah Alam.

The Youth Leadership Forum was organised on August 26 at SPT Chapter. A total of 55 Youth leaders attended the forum and were briefed by Assistant Director, Youth and the Chapter O/C Youth. The main objective of the briefing was to encourage the school Units to carry out the courses for MRC youth proficiency badges during the year and to provide the leaders who attended with guidelines for their activities.

A Leadership Camp for Primary School Uniform Bodies was organized by the District Education Office (PPD) of Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) from September 18 to 20 at Kem PLKN, Kulim. The Branch sent a total of 35 Link members accompanied by 3 Youth Officers to attend the 3-day 2-night camp.

On October 4 to 7, the Penang State Education Department (JPN) organized the Co-curriculum Management and Administration Course at Langkawi. JPN invited 3 MRC Youth Officers to attend. These were Ms Lily Foo, Mdm Ooi Hwei Ching and Mr Daniel Lim. This was a refresher course for the JPN appointed Co-curriculum Technical Officers, with the main objective of improving the co-curriculum co-ordination among the uniform bodies.

The Youth Development Forum was successfully held on October 20 at the MRC Penang Branch Office. A total of 36 Youth Officers and all Chapter O/C Youth attended the forum. The main purpose of the forum was to help the Youth Officers to understand the MRC standard operating procedures (SOP) and their roles at the School Units, as well as to provide for open discussion on youth development matters. The aim was to have these Youth Officers to be more committed to the MRC and to have their School Units to actively serve the community.

All the activities for the Youth and Link members were successfully carried through with the support of the relevant MRC Officers at Branch and Chapter levels as well as the Youth Officers at the schools. The Branch worked closely the State Education Department (JPN) and the various District Education Offices (PPD) in supporting the Department’s programmes for the school children.

It was therefore gratifying to learn that the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) recognized the inputs of our MRC Officers and appointed Mr Daniel Lim Tat Pin, the MRC Island Chapter O/C Youth as the National Co-curriculum Technical Officer.  Mr Lim, who is also a teacher at SMK St. Xavier’s, received his warrant of appointment at the Ministry’s Office at Putrajaya on March 14, 2012.
