The mothers were visited by the district members and received the hampers filled with essential baby items.

P. Puvana, who gave birth to her second son at 6.10am that day said she was happy that her son was born on a meaningful and significant day.

“I did not know that May 8 is a special day before their visit and after learning about it. I’m happy that he was born on this day.

“I hope he will grow up to be successful and helpful to others,” she said when met at the hospital’s maternity ward on Monday.

District chairman Rayson Khoo said World Red Crescent Day was celebrated worldwide to honour International Red Cross Society founder Sir Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We organise visits to the hospital’s maternity ward every year to commemorate Dunant’s birth and by spreading happiness to others.

“Dunant was a selfless person and he sacrificed a lot for charity work,” he said.

Khoo said the society’s members looked forward to the event every year as they get to meet babies born on the same day as Dunant, who was also the first Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Mothers of 11 babies born on this day received hampers from the organisation which also brought cakes and snacks to be shared at the ward.
