MRC Penang chairman Datuk B.J. Yeang, who is also the organising chairman of the concert, said that each year, the branch needed RM220,000 to maintain and sustain their 12-hour ambulance service in Permatang Tinggi. “The amount is big because there are at least four trained paramedics on duty each day. They get paid for their full-time service. We also have to spend on petrol, maintenance, medical supplies and other things. The service is provided on a daily basis from 7am to 7pm because accidents always happen during peak hours,” she said at a press conference at Gurney Paragon. She encouraged music lovers and the public to attend the charity concert which they hoped could raise more than RM200,000.

State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng said that the ambulance service played an important role in helping the government hospitals to answer distress calls from the public.

At the same event, Boon Siew Honda, Lam Wah Ee Hospital and well-wisher Joanne Lim presented a RM10,000 mock cheque each to MRC for the concert.

Donors for the concert can also participate in the beating of gong (RM3,000) or ribbon-cutting ceremony (RM1,000) during the premiere night on Nov 10. All donations to MRC are tax-exempted. Admission to the charity concert is by way of donation, at amounts of RM200, RM100 and RM50. For more information, contact Cindy Liao or Lim Choon Keat of MRC at 04-8275678.

Fire drill at varsity

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

It was a hive of activity at Wawasan Open University’s (WOU) main campus on Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah in Penang recently as some 150 students, teachers and workers took part in a fire evacuation exercise.

The tranquility of the morning was rudely interrupted by the shrill fire alarm, alerting the campus community to rush to the nearest emergency exit staircase.

Then 15 firemen in three fire-engines “put out” the fire.

The police and Malaysian Red Crescent Society also rendered help to the firemen from the Perak Road, Bagan Jermal and Beach Street fire stations.

The fire drill was the culmination of the week-long inaugural WOU Safety Week, launched by its vice-chancellor Tan Sri Emeritus Prof D. Gajaraj on May 14.

WOU has also formed its own Emergency Response Team (ERT) and First Aid Team to cater to any crisis which might arise within the campus grounds.
