300 Red Crescent members on standby

Monday, August 13th, 2012

THREE hundred members and six ambulances from the Penang branch of the Malaysian Red Crescent will be placed on 24-hour standby during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Its chairman Datuk B.J. Yeang said the six vehicles and members would be on standby along state roads starting from Thursday until Aug 22. Those on standby are trained in first aid, pre-hospital care and basic life support.

“Our aim is to provide paramedic services to the injured as well as to minimise or prevent further injuries before they are transported to the hospital for treatment,” Yeang said at the launching of the festive rescue service in Simpang Ampat near Nibong Tebal yesterday.

South Seberang Prai Deputy OCPD DSP Shariffudin Abdullah officiated the event.

Yeang said the ambulances and members would be stationed at its branch offices in Jalan Grove, Air Itam, Jalan St Marks in Butterworth, Taman Alma in Bukit Mertajam and Permatang Tinggi in Bukit Mertajam.

Each ambulance is equipped with the HEARL (Hospital Emergency Ambulance Radio Link) System which enables the Red Crescent to communicate with ambulances, government hospitals, St John’s Ambulance Malaysia, Civil Defence and other emergency medical services.

DSP Shariffudin advised road users to be alert and observe the rules. He said: “Please also do not drink and drive.” He also reminded road users that a maximum compound would be slapped on traffic offenders during the festive period.

The public are advised to call 999 in case of any emergency.
