The big crowd at the CPR carnival are happy to pick up a new lifesaving skill.

MORE than 6,700 people in Penang took part in a mass cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) session helping the event to enter the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest of such gathering in the country.

Organising chairman Dr Luah Lean Wah said the Mass CPR Carnival 2015 at the Han Chiang High School indoor stadium on Penang island beat the previous record of 4,459 in a CPR gathering in Johor in 2006.

“It is a testimony of the growing awareness among the people about this lifesaving technique,” said Dr Luah yesterday.

“Several schools in Penang sent more than 3,500 students and there was a very strong response from the police force with 1,000 policemen and policewomen taking part.

“We had a pre-registered number of 7,700 but the Malaysia Book of Records accepts only confirmed slips signed by the participants who have undergone the skills training.”

The carnival was opened by state Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin.
