LAM Wah Ee Hospital has donated RM5,000 to help flood victims in the east coast of peninsula Malaysia.

The donation via The Star-MRCS-Firefly Relief Fund was handed over to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Penang branch in aid of the ongoing flood relief efforts.

The hospital’s recycling project committee chairman Cheow Mooy Chew said the fund was raised through the hospital’s recycling project.

“The recycling is an ongoing project which we started in 2002.

“We have collected about RM300,000 over the past 13 years with the support of our staff to help needy patients and these kind of relief funds,” she said after handing over the mock cheque to MRC Penang Branch administrator Cindy Liao at the Penang MRCS office in Jalan Grove recently.

Liao said contributions would be sent to MRCS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and channelled out accordingly.

“All donations given to MRCS are tax exempted.

“Those wishing to help via MRCS can write out cheques to the ‘MRCS Penang Branch’ or by cash deposit to its account in Public Bank Bhd (Account No 3087736505),” she said.

The public can hand in donations to the MRCS office in Jalan Grove or call MRCS Penang Branch at 04-8275678 on weekdays from 9am to 6pm.

MRC Penang chairman Datuk B.J. Yeang, who is also the organising chairman of the concert, said that each year, the branch needed RM220,000 to maintain and sustain their 12-hour ambulance service in Permatang Tinggi. “The amount is big because there are at least four trained paramedics on duty each day. They get paid for their full-time service. We also have to spend on petrol, maintenance, medical supplies and other things. The service is provided on a daily basis from 7am to 7pm because accidents always happen during peak hours,” she said at a press conference at Gurney Paragon. She encouraged music lovers and the public to attend the charity concert which they hoped could raise more than RM200,000.

State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng said that the ambulance service played an important role in helping the government hospitals to answer distress calls from the public.

At the same event, Boon Siew Honda, Lam Wah Ee Hospital and well-wisher Joanne Lim presented a RM10,000 mock cheque each to MRC for the concert.

Donors for the concert can also participate in the beating of gong (RM3,000) or ribbon-cutting ceremony (RM1,000) during the premiere night on Nov 10. All donations to MRC are tax-exempted. Admission to the charity concert is by way of donation, at amounts of RM200, RM100 and RM50. For more information, contact Cindy Liao or Lim Choon Keat of MRC at 04-8275678.
