Penang Heritage Walk 2013 — Jointly organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Penang Branch and Kwong Wah Yit Poh, the annual event which was into its fifth year saw participants from all walks of life gathering as early as 6.30am before the recent event’s 8am flag off in front of the Town Hall at the Esplanade.

The participants of the 5km walk passed through the George Town heritage enclave before heading back to the starting point.

Among the heritage sites covered by the walk were the Penang Islamic Museum, Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh, Dr Sun Yat Sen Penang Base, St George’s Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Masjid Kapitan Keling.

Student Janice Tan, 14, said she looked forward to participating in the event after hearing about it from her friends. “I love the idea of taking pictures while walking and enjoying the scenic and historic sites with my friends.”

For S. Raju, 17, the walk was a good way to spend time with his family members who also participated in the event. “This is a healthy activity which is different from what we usually do such as shopping or watching movies,” he added.

MRC Penang branch chairman Datuk B.J. Yeang said the turnout for the walk was very encouraging and showed that Penangites were still very health conscious. “The turnout shows that they acknowledge walking as an excellent form of exercise. Many companies and organisations have also given us their support by sending their staff members to join us in the walk. To these companies and organisations as well as others who have supported the event, I thank you for your support,” she added.

MORE than 60 exciting prizes await lucky draw winners of the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Heritage Walk 2012 on Sept 23.

The prizes include a Honda motorcycle, China Airlines air ticket, hotel stay vouchers and lots more, event organising chairman Loh Nam Hooi said.

He said the organising committee was still sourcing for more attractive prizes including an IPad. “We hope more corporations and well-wishers can come forward to sponsor the prizes for a good cause.

“Those giving RM300 and above will be invited to take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the start of the walk. Donors are also invited to join the VIP walk,” he said at a press conference recently.

Participants will be given a Heritage Walk T-shirt which they must wear to qualify for the lucky draw.

The 5km walk will cover heritage sites such as the Yeah Kongsi, Dr Sun Yat Sen Penang Base, the Penang Islamic Museum and the Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh. The route also covers the ‘Street of Harmony’ where St George’s Church, Kuan Im Teng Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Masjid Kapitan Keling are located.

Loh said the society hoped to raise RM200,000 from the event to fund the Penang branch’s humanitarian projects, conduct first aid training and pre-hospital care and disaster relief management programmes.

“This is the fourth year we are organising this walk and we are inviting heritage and sports enthusiasts, families and employee groups from various corporations to come and join in the fun,” he said.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who was the first participant to sign up for the event, said the public should show their support for the walk while appreciating the uniqueness of George Town’s living heritage and buildings.

“It’s a short walk, not a race, so come and enjoy the beauty of the heritage enclave on a leisurely Sunday — the experience is very different from when you pass through the city on weekdays,” he said.

Jointly organised by the MRC Penang Branch and Kwong Wah Yit Poh, the walk will be flagged-off in front of the Town Hall at the Esplanade at 8am.

Registration forms are available at the MRC Penang Branch at 26, Grove Road, and at the MRC Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) Chapter at 2, Jalan St Mark, Butterworth.
