Lots of support for charity food fair

Thursday, November 3rd, 2016

DESPITE the rain, more than 2,000 people made their way to the charity food fair organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) in Prai, Penang.

Families could be seen bringing along their tiffin carriers to take food home at the event held at the Chai Leng Park multi-purpose hall.

They thronged 51 stalls selling all types of food such as dumplings, ice cream, nasi lemak, noodles, curry chicken, chapati and char koay teow.

Organising committee chairman Tan Ee Lye said the response to the event was overwhelming.

“This will help us to achieve the RM200,000 target for the ambulance service.

“The society spends about RM600,000 a year on the 12-hour ambulance service centres in Permatang Tinggi and Butterworth on the mainland and one in Batu Maung on the island.

“So we need to raise funds to maintain our services and train our members.

“We also need funds to cover the operation costs of our administrative offices,” he told reporters at the recent food fair.

The event was opened by state Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh.

Also present was MRCS Penang branch chairman Datuk B.J. Yeang.

Phee commended MRCS for its humanitarian work and appealed to the public to help the society out.

“MRCS is an apolitical organisation and provides assistance to everyone.

“The society is always on the frontlines in the event of a disaster.”

Francis Lim, 35, an engineer from Kulim, Kedah, said he came to the food fair to support MRCS as it does important work, especially when disaster strikes.

Businessman S. Padmanathan, 42, said he came in spite of the rain to help the society reach its fundraising target.

THE Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) in Penang is hoping to raise RM200,000 to fund its 12-hour ambulance service.

The society will be holding the MRCS Charity Food Fair 2016 to raise the amount.

Event organising chairman Tan Ee Lye said the food fair would be held on Oct 16 at the Chai Leng Park multi-purpose hall in Prai from 9am to 1.30pm.

He said there are three 12-hour ambulance service centres situated in Permatang Tinggi and Butterworth on the mainland, and one in Batu Maung on the island.

“We are expecting about 3,000 people to attend the event,” he told a press conference at the MRCS Penang headquarters in Grove Road recently.

MRCS Penang branch chairman Datuk B.J. Yeang said the society needs funds to train members, upgrade its ambulance service and rescue vehicles and for the operations of the state and district administrative offices.

She also reminded the public to bring their own bags or containers to support the state government’s ‘No Plastic Bag’ policy.

Also present was state Wel-fare, Caring Society, Health and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh.

He commended the society for its humanitarian-based work and appealed to the public to lend the group a helping hand.

Each booklet is priced at RM30 and available at the MRCS Penang headquarters as well as the society’s district offices.
