Penang Heritage Walk 2013 — Jointly organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Penang Branch and Kwong Wah Yit Poh, the annual event which was into its fifth year saw participants from all walks of life gathering as early as 6.30am before the recent event’s 8am flag off in front of the Town Hall at the Esplanade.

The participants of the 5km walk passed through the George Town heritage enclave before heading back to the starting point.

Among the heritage sites covered by the walk were the Penang Islamic Museum, Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh, Dr Sun Yat Sen Penang Base, St George’s Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Masjid Kapitan Keling.

Student Janice Tan, 14, said she looked forward to participating in the event after hearing about it from her friends. “I love the idea of taking pictures while walking and enjoying the scenic and historic sites with my friends.”

For S. Raju, 17, the walk was a good way to spend time with his family members who also participated in the event. “This is a healthy activity which is different from what we usually do such as shopping or watching movies,” he added.

MRC Penang branch chairman Datuk B.J. Yeang said the turnout for the walk was very encouraging and showed that Penangites were still very health conscious. “The turnout shows that they acknowledge walking as an excellent form of exercise. Many companies and organisations have also given us their support by sending their staff members to join us in the walk. To these companies and organisations as well as others who have supported the event, I thank you for your support,” she added.

A lucky draw was also held in conjunction with the event which was flagged off by Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng.
