Balance the key to life

Saturday, October 1st, 2005

BALANCE is the key to harmony. The ying and yang of life.

Berapit assemblyman Lau Chiek Tuan said it would be pointless to have gained all the treasures of the world but lose one’s soul.

“Likewise, it would be meaningless if intellectuals merely care about their own careers but contribute nothing to their own community and country,” he said when addressing 250 Malaysian Red Crescent members at the appointment and appreciation certificate presentation ceremony held in Bukit Mertajam recently.

Lau said the process of grooming future leaders must also incorporate the spirit of patriotism and good values.

“And what is more important is that he or she supports the vision of the country.”

Lau, who is also a State Executive Councillor, said leaders must equip themselves with knowledge and skills to prepare themselves for the coming challenges.

“This is the era of globalisation, rapid changes and steep competition.”

Earlier in his speech, MRCS Central South chairman Dr Yang Yit Min advised members to have a sense of pride in their voluntary work.  He said although the chapter was the smallest in the state, it had the most volunteers.

“Our members even have to cross over to Penang island on many occasions to perform their duty.”  Work had been so demanding that the branch has stationed a four-wheel drive vehicle in Bukit Mertajam to carry out the society’s activities, he added.
