Crowd gets donation flowing on World Blood Donor Day

WBDD2014 at Gurney Paragon

A CONTINUOUS flow of volunteers streamed in to the Gurney Paragon Mall in Penang for a blood donation drive in conjunction with the World Blood Donor Day 2014. The event themed “Care, Love, Save” was organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Penang branch.

MRCS Island chapter chairman Nancy Cheah said the theme was chosen to show that MRC cared for the people and the nation. Besides the blood donation drive, the event also saw exhibitions on first-aid knowledge, CPR demonstrations, health check stations and knife massage therapy by the Taiwan Knife Massage Association.

Organising chairman Fong Kwok Khuen said it was the first year the event was held at Gurney Paragon Mall. “We are grateful that the mall decided to be our venue sponsor and we hope we can continue organising this event here,” he said at the event on Sunday.

Penangite Teoh Boon Peng, 55, who had been donating blood every three months since 2000, said he believed it was the right thing to do as donating blood would save lives. “This has become very normal for me. It only takes 15 minutes including resting time and I feel fine afterwards,” he added.

Auditor Lee Huai En, 28, started donating blood since her college years when her college held a blood donation drive. “I have donated less than 10 times, but I find it very meaningful and I plan to donate more blood whenever there is an event,” she said.

Food fair raises funds for society’s ambulance service

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

In an effort to raise funds for the 12-hour ambulance service in Permatang Tinggi and Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth, Penang, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society Island chapter organised a charity food fair.

The event, in Methodist Boys School Penang (MBS), saw people from all walks of life doing their part for charity. Organising committee chairman Nancy Cheah thanked all who made the event a success on Sunday. “We are glad to see everyone here doing their part for a good cause,” she said during the speech.

A total of 47 stalls served various types of food, including Thai, Korean, Malay, Indian and Chinese cuisines. There were also stalls selling vegetarian and halal dishes. There was also a string of performances by various groups of dancers.

Students from seven schools, Penang Free School, St Xavier’s Institution, Methodist Girls School, SMK Seri Mutiara, SMK Westlands and MBS were also in the thick of action.

Air Itam Assemblyman Wong Hon Wai later presented certificates of appreciation to those who were involved in the fair.
