Hampers for 8 Red Crescent babies

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

SLEEPING soundly, clerk Hasrini Hasin’s one-day old firstborn was oblivious to the attention showered on her when Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Penang Island Chapter members paid a visit to the Penang Maternity Hospital.

MRCS had welcomed her as a Red Crescent baby to honour International Red Cross Society founder Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828, in Geneva,

“We have been doing this since the early 90s and today, we’re happy to welcome eight Red Crescent babies born on May 8 at the Penang Maternity Hospital,” MRCS Penang Island chapter acting chairman Nancy Cheah said.

Hasrini, 27, said her 3.52kg baby girl was born at 2.09am, and thanked MRCS for the hampers.

“I will encourage her to join MRCS to help and care for others,” she said.
Assistant accountant Siti Nurbaya Osman, 38, who delivered her sixth child at 9.10am that day, said she too hoped that her daughter would join the MRCS when in school.

“My eldest child who is in Year Four is an MRCS member and I hope that my youngest can follow in her footsteps and learn to have compassion for people.
“I also hope that my children show interest in medicine and in serving others so that they can grow up to be doctors and perform noble deeds,” she said.

Eight babies, four girls and four boys, by four local and four foreign women were born at the maternity hospital.

New Year Party 2008

Friday, February 15th, 2008

While most people would be reveling in joy for the coming of the new year, there are those who do not share the same pomp and pageantry. Every year, for more than a decade, members of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Island Chapter has brought joy and hope to the patients in the Pediatric wards, Hospital Pulau Pinang.

The New Year Party this year was organised by the dedicated committees and members of the Volunteer Aid Detachment 21, as with the parties in previous years. The event started at 9.30am in the morning where the Red Crescent Society members were welcomed by the management and staff of the hospital. The members started out by sorting out all kind of soft toys, books, food & drinks into 100 goodie bags, which will be distributed to the patients in the wards. Most of the goods were donated by individuals, private organization and schools.

We would like to extend our utmost gratitude for their contribution. Mr. Kam Man Ho from VAD 21, who is also a professional clown /magician, started to prepare balloons sculpture with help of the youth (secondary school) members. Meanwhile, others members started to distribute books, packets of foods, cakes, drinks & balloon sculpture to every child warded there. They were very happy to receive different kinds of cute little animals made by balloons as well as food packs. After distributing the goodie bags , the children from ward C1 & C2 were gathered together for a rainbow show.

Dr. Chong Hon Yew along with Mr. Lim Choon Kiat as the representative from Astronomy Club of University Science Malaysia had the hands on activity with the children to make rainbow shine in the recycled tissue paper box. The children gave a very good respond to the activity.

The party came to an end at 11.45am. All of us gathered along for a short speech from the Organizing Chairman as an appreciation to thank everyone for their contribution especially Penang General Hospital to achieve this event into great success. A cake cutting/singing ceremony was presented to the children at the closing ceremony.
