The mothers were visited by the district members and received the hampers filled with essential baby items.

P. Puvana, who gave birth to her second son at 6.10am that day said she was happy that her son was born on a meaningful and significant day.

“I did not know that May 8 is a special day before their visit and after learning about it. I’m happy that he was born on this day.

“I hope he will grow up to be successful and helpful to others,” she said when met at the hospital’s maternity ward on Monday.

District chairman Rayson Khoo said World Red Crescent Day was celebrated worldwide to honour International Red Cross Society founder Sir Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We organise visits to the hospital’s maternity ward every year to commemorate Dunant’s birth and by spreading happiness to others.

“Dunant was a selfless person and he sacrificed a lot for charity work,” he said.

Khoo said the society’s members looked forward to the event every year as they get to meet babies born on the same day as Dunant, who was also the first Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Mothers of 11 babies born on this day received hampers from the organisation which also brought cakes and snacks to be shared at the ward.

Island chairman bids adieu after 30 years

Thursday, May 12th, 2016

MALAYSIAN Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Penang Island Chapter members sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ to send off their chairman Nancy Cheah, who retired after serving the society for 30 years.

Cheah stood at the back of a disaster relief Jeep and waved at the young members, who lined up and saluted her for her contributions over the years.

Proudly wearing the society’s uniform, the 80-year-old said serving as the Island Chapter chairman for the past eight years had been a wonderful experience but it was time to pass on the baton.

Known for her compassionate nature, sense of selflessness and dedication to volunteer work, Cheah was a Red Crescent (RC) member in her schooling days in the 1950’s.

She then joined the Island Chapter committee in 1986 after her daughter joined the society at school.

Cheah said in her farewell speech that there was no looking back since then but it was time to surrender her chair and take a back seat.

She then reminisced of the many experiences she had had while serving the society.

She said this included the tsunami tragedy in 2004, where she volunteered for 24 hours straight.

“Another memorable moment for me was in 1994 when MRCS collaborated with a group of superbikers for an AIDS awareness campaign.

“We went around town distri-buting pamphlets and speaking to people,” she said at their headquarters in Grove Road recently.

She said she would still serve the society as an advisor as long as she could because Red Crescent is in her blood.

Cheah had also received the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK) title in 2006 and Pingat Kelakuan Terpuji (PKT) in 2012 from the state for her contributions to MRCS and other organisations she served in.

The event also saw over 200 secondary school students from eight schools pledging to serve the society in their ‘youth unit’ at the annual MRCS, Island Chapter mass enrolment ceremony.
