SUNWAY Carnival Mall in Seberang Prai has come forward to help the flood victims in the east coast states.

Items like canned food, biscuits, mineral water, milk powder, rice, diapers, soap and clothing were collected through the ‘Share For Care Flood Aid’ programme. The initiative was held at the mall’s upper ground concourse from Jan 1 to Jan 11.

The mall’s general manager Chow Heng Wah said the aid was donated by shoppers, tenants and their staff members. “We thank them all for the support.

“We hope we can alleviate the suffering of the flood victims,” he said.

He was speaking after handing over the items to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) North Seberang Prai chapter recently.

MRCS deputy chairman Nick Foo Toon Yong, who was present to receive the aid, thanked the mall for coming up with the initiative to help the needy. “The aid will be sent to our headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

“Then, it will be delivered to the victims in Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak and Pahang,” he said.

THE 10th Penang Golden New Year’s Eve Countdown Celebration (PG2015) will see a fundraising initiative held in aid of the flood victims in the country.

PG2015 organised by CreatiVision D.C. Sdn Bhd and endorsed by the Penang Municipal Council will be held from 5pm to midnight on Wednesday.

CreatiVision managing director Adelyn Lim said the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) would be setting up a counter during PG2015 to collect aid for the flood victims.

“Every event must be able to ‘send a message’, and this event can be a platform to help the victims of floods.

“The public can hand over donations at the MRCS counter at the Esplanade from 10am until after midnight on Wednesday.

“There will also be a cycling event called the ‘Ride of Light’ in which G-Club Penang Cyclists is the co-organiser,” Lim said during an interview at Glow Penang in Macalister Road on Saturday.

Lim said the cycling route would cover the Esplanade, Farquhar Street, Penang Road, Prangin Street and Beach Street.

“The MRCS and a van will be following the route to collect items donated by the public between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

“Those who are along the route and wish to donate can call 019-2720999 or 019-2272000,” she said.

Lim asked the public to keep themselves updated by visiting CreatiVision’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/creativision.

She said the initiative to help the flood victims was called ‘Love from Penang Fund Raising Campaign for the Flood Victims’.

“The initiative is by Rainbow of Life Forces (ROLF): Gold Ribbon Grant-A-Wish Campaign.

“ROLF is the charity arm of CreatiVision,” she said.

Lim added that there would be no fireworks display during PG2015. Instead, a moment of silence will be observed.

At a press conference in Glow Penang, MRCS island chapter chairman Nancy Cheah said the preferred form of donation was cash.

“The cash is needed so that supplies can be obtained as required from sources closer to the affected areas.

“However, those who wish to donate foodstuff can contribute canned food, milk, and Milo among other items.

“Donations can also be made via cheque to MRCS Penang Branch or via deposit to its account in Public Bank (3087736505).

“The public can call MRCS Penang Branch at 04-8275678 for more details,” Cheah said.

For more details of PG2015, the public can visit www.9-creativision.com or CreatiVision’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/creativision.

Alternatively, call its hotline (03-62500999 or 019-2694000).

Heritage Walk 2014

SOME 1,500 people woke up early to join the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Heritage Walk 2014. Participants from all walks of life gathered as early as 6.30am on Saturday in front of the Town Hall at the Esplanade.

State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow then flagged off the event at 8am. The 6.5km walk, an increase in distance from last year’s event, covered the George Town heritage enclave. Participants walked past heritage sites like the Penang Islamic Museum, Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh, Dr Sun Yat Sen Penang base, St George’s Church, the Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Masjid Kapitan Keling.

MRC Penang Branch administrator Cindy Liao said they decided to increase the distance of the walk due to requests from the public and participants. “When we started, the route was only 4km, then 4.5km and later 5km. Still we got feedback that the distance was too short. This year, it’s 6.5km,” she said, adding that the entries also increased each year.

SMK Seri Balik Pulau science teacher Lai Sook Kim, 51, who brought along her septuagenarian parents, said the walk promoted a healthy lifestyle.

A mother, who wanted to be known only as Mary, 47, brought her daughters A. Monica Ann, 11, and A. Ann Maria, 15, for the walk. “My daughters enjoy taking part in walks. They took part in the Affin Bank Heritage Walk recently and were really excited to come today,” she said.

After the walk, a lucky draw was held for the walkers.

HERITAGE enthusiasts can take part in the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Heritage Walk 2014 on June 22.  The walk, jointly organised by the MRC Penang branch and Kwong Wah Yit Poh, will be held for the sixth year.

Event organising chairman Loh Nam Hooi said the walk this year would incorporate an additional 1.5km to the route.  “Heritage lovers can enjoy a 6.5km walk in George Town. The places they will pass by include the Yeap Kongsi, Poh Hock Seah Temple, Dr Sun Yat Sen Penang Base, Penang Islamic Museum, St George’s Church, Kuan Im Teng (Goddess of Mercy Temple), Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Masjid Kapitan Keling.  We expect to raise more than RM150,000 for the MRC Penang branch to fund various humanitarian projects,” Loh said.  He added that the walk was to mark the sixth anniversary of George Town being declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Loh said one of their humanitarian projects provided community-based ambulance service in three areas — Permatang Tinggi, Jalan Raja Uda and Batu Maung.  “We also need funds to train our members in first aid and rescue skills, disaster relief and management,” he added.

Participation form for the walk are available at the MRC Penang branch at 26, Grove Road, and at the MRC north Seberang Prai Ambulance Service Office in Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth.  Registration fee is RM30 per person.  Each participant will receive a Heritage Walk T-shirt which has to be worn during the walk in order for the participant to qualify for a lucky draw.  The forms should be submitted by June 20.

Well-wishers are also welcome to donate to the event and those who give a minimum of RM300 will be entitled to take part in a ribbon- cutting ceremony.  For details, call MRC Penang at 04-8275678 or MRC north Seberang Prai at 04-3330999.
